From Brain Fog to Dementia: How to Save Your Brain

What is your most precious possession? Whether you realize it or not it is your brain! If you’ve ever met someone with Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s or dementia you know the horrors of losing one’s brain function. It is your brain that makes you who you are. Our brain is singularly the most complex and misunderstood organ of our body! It comprises only 2% of your total body weight, utilizes more than 20% of the oxygen, at least 25% of the available calories we consume and is one of the most metabolically active organs in the body. Yet, like any bodily organ its health is maintained by proper diet, necessary nutrients, exercise and care. It can be harmed by chemicals and toxins in the environment or substances we consume.

A brain that is healthy and flexible can bring about a focused and happy life. A healthy brain is one that can easily focus on a task and stick with it until completion. Flexibility is a hallmark of a healthy brain, the mental dexterity to move in and out of new and changing situations without anxiety or rigidity. A healthy brain is a happy brain finding joy and beauty in living. Do you have a healthy brain?

Are you having trouble with focus, mental stamina, short-term memory, moodiness, anxiety and insomnia? You may be experiencing what is been described by many as “brain fog”. This brain fog is a side effect of our fast-paced, industrialized lifestyle filled with processed and junk foods. On top of this we are inundated with herbicides, pesticides, toxic chemicals and heavy metals. These insults from our diet and environment lead to chronic inflammation and free radical damage in our tissues, especially in our brain.

Here’s a short scientific explanation of this process. Chronic inflammation and free radicals in your body causes a sustained release of chemical messengers called cytokines which help regulate your immune system. Over time these cytokines can over stimulate specialized cells in the brain called microglia. The role of these microglia cells are to maintain brain health and function. These microglia cells have no off switch, so when overstimulated by these messengers of chronic inflammation, they can cause brain cell damage and decreased brain function leading to the symptoms we first recognize as brain fog.

Because our muscles and joints have pain receptors they let us know when they’re being injured by this chronic inflammation and free radicals. Our brain has no pain receptors and sends us no direct signal that it’s being injured. However, in this state of chronic low-grade inflammation our brain starts to lose ground in its ability to function properly. Hence problems again with focus, mental stamina, memory, mood and sleep, daily things are brain does for us. An inflamed brain is in agitated brain! An even more compelling concern of low-grade chronic brain inflammation is that it can lead to Parkinson’s, dementia and Alzheimer’s!

The good news is that low-grade chronic brain inflammation is a condition that can be corrected. Do you want to regain your energy, focus, memory and joy in living? It can be accomplished if you address the underlying issues that are causing your brain fog, which can be identified with proper laboratory testing. Your brain relies on an adequate level of vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, amino acids, oxygen, just the right amount of glucose and adequate sleep to stay healthy.

Specific functional laboratory tests can identify the type of diet you need to eat and specific supplements to take to optimize your brain function. Do you need a diet lower in carbohydrates, higher or lower in protein, increased specific fatty acids? As far as the health of your brain and its optimal function, you do not want to rely on guesswork or self-diagnosis from the Internet. Nor are you going to find the help you need from your conventional health practitioner. You need a doctor who specializes in functional neurology.

By utilizing a natural Functional Medicine approach brain fog issues can be conquered! By optimizing your diet and nutrient levels, eliminating toxins, correcting any leaky gut, and removing food allergies you will be able to overcome your chronic inflammation and heal your brain, improving your focus, mood and memory, unlocking the full potential of your life. Many patients have and so can you! All you need is the proper guidance.
