Minnesota Spinal Manipulative Therapy & Chiropractic Neurology
The modern science of spinal manipulative therapy goes back to Hippocrates (470-357 B.C.), known as the “Father of Modern Medicine.” He wrote, “Get knowledge of the spine, for this is requisite for many diseases.” Socrates (469-399 B.C.) advised, “If you would seek health, look first to the spine.” The ancient Chinese physician used the spinal manipulative therapy in conjunction with acupuncture to optimize health in their patients.
SMT - How It Works
For real healing and optimal health it is vital to have perfect communication and coordination of body function. Your nervous system controls and coordinates all organs and structures in your body. When your spine has a vertebrae or disc that is even slightly misaligned, it can cause irritation and interruption to the nervous system. It only takes the pressure of a “dime” on a nerve to cause it to lose proper communication. Over time spinal manipulative therapy gently moves the vertebrae or disc back into place so it is not interfering with the nerve.

SMT is a lot like orthodontics, which utilizes the correct pressure in the right direction applied over time to optimize alignment of your teeth. You wouldn't expect the orthodontist to apply corrective braces and remove them within a month expecting the teeth to now be aligned. The connective tissues that hold the teeth must be retrained with braces over many months or even years to hold them in the correct alignment. Your spinal column is a more complex dynamic structure and therefore needs at least as much care. Therefore to get the healing you so desire you must invest some time.
Chiropractic Neurology
Chiropractic neurology is a specialty within the chiropractic field that assesses the neurological condition of a patient and treats that patient using non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical therapies. Examination and assessment is similar to that of medical neurologists, however treatment modalities differ greatly. Medical doctors utilize pharmaceutical and surgical intervention and management. Chiropractic neurologists focus on brain-based physical rehabilitation, utilizing afferent stimulation specifically targeting dysfunctioning areas of the brain and nervous system along with nutraceutical intervention for metabolic dysfunction. Therapies are specifically tailored to each individual's neurologic function. Dr. Greg Fors is a Board-certified neurologist through the International Academy Of Clinical Neurology.
